Poetry Slam

The Famous Going West Festival 2016 Poetry Slam kicked off  in August with heats across Auckland. The Grand Final took place on September 10 in Titrangi.

The Grand Final Prizes

First prize $1000

Second prize $500

Third prize $300

This is where the spoken word hits the road in a fast-paced evening of competitive performance poetry with generous cash prizes. With courage to the fore, poets from all backgrounds and beliefs speak from the heart with passion, intelligence and a desire to tell their stories. It is powerful and, above all, immensely entertaining.

The 2016 winners are:

Winner Jennifer Rockwell, who came out of nowhere, to enter the final 4th heat on the night, her stunning, powerful, original, message based works, were backed up with soulful, confident performances.
2nd Place Michael Moore, again had such emotive works about both love and violence and his final performance was so powerful and heartfelt that it left both him and many audience members in tears.
3rd Place Onehau Strickland’s works were clever, witty, well crafted, personal and again exceptionally well performed.

Directed by Doug Poole, assisted by MC Zane Scarborough and guest judges Raewyn Alexander, Emma Neale and Rewa Worley.
