Maualaivao Albert Wendt is one of the foremost writers and academics in Samoa, New Zealand and the Pacific. He has published numerous novels, collections of poetry and short stories, and edited several notable anthologies of Pacific writing. His work has been translated into many languages and taught around the world. He has taught at all educational levels. And through his teaching and writing, he has changed how we perceive the Pacific and ourselves. He has been awarded many literary prizes and honours. In 2012 he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in fiction, and in 2013, our country’s highest honour, the Order of New Zealand. He is Emeritus Professor of English at Auckland University, and lives with his partner Reina Whaitiri in Ponsonby, Auckland and continues to write and paint full time. They have 10 mokopuna.
