Celebrating our stories
The Going West Books & Writers Festival happens every September in Auckland. Based in Titirangi, it encompasses events in other parts of the West as well.
The centrepiece of the Festival is our annual Literary Weekend, which runs from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. The daytime programme features New Zealand writers in conversation, panel discussions, readings and more.
Friday evening's gala opening includes the Curnow Reader, a noted New Zealand poet performing their work; and the Douglas Orator, a respected writer speaking to the theme of the year's festival.
Saturday night showcases the city's best slam poets from the north, south, east and west, competing in the Auckland Poetry Slam Finals.
The Festival also includes a Theatre Season, film screening, and other satellite events.
