First up - Dear Oliver: Uncovering a Pākehā history, Peter Wells, Massey University Press.
"I have always loved the writing of Peter and enjoyed his many appearances at Going West in the past. Dear Oliver is presented as a letter to a cousin’s child. The whole book is about letters from many histories – woven into a compelling text that is memoir, biography, autobiography and local history.
It tells the early story of Napier, its founding and the precarious life of its citizens over a century. War, flu, slump, earthquake and war. That litany provides a framework for the lives of three generations of the family but particular of mother and son. 'An autobiography of my family.'
Heartwarming, informed and passionate – read it and weep a little."
