Read With Murray: False River by Paula Morris.
Paula Morris is a writer. She is also a teacher, a critic and a public intellectual but she is ,first and foremost, a writer.
Even her tweets will show her elegant and concise style that shines through all her work. Her new book, False River, is a miscellany of fact and fiction. She talks of death and hysterectomy with the same even gaze as she does of cyclones and witch-burning. The faction often contains fiction bubbling through like small volcanoes. It is hard to imagine better descriptions of the waste-land following the cyclones that ravaged Louisiana and Florida. Some small and polished gems, secret histories of Billy the Kid or Laura Ingalls, essays on her mother (who talked too much) and short travel pieces make this an ideal book of short, powerful stories.
Paula Morris is the 2018 Sir Graeme Douglas Orator. She will present a keynote address at our Opening Night. Paula Morris is also speaking with Susanna Andrew, Simon Wilson, and Shamubeel Eaqub on Sunday, September 16 at 11 am.
