Recently retired from Geomarine Research Dr Hayward is a geologist and marine ecologist and has written 22 books on aspects of New Zealand’s fossils, geology, marine ecology, conservation, archaeology and history. He is a walking fountain of knowledge. His popular publications include: Volcanoes of Auckland: The essential guide (with Graeme Murdoch and Gordon Maitland); A field guide to Auckland (with Ewen Cameron and Graeme Murdoch); and The Restless Country: Volcanoes and earthquakes of New Zealand (with Geoff Cox). His recent book Out of the Ocean into the Fire: History in the rocks, fossils and landforms of Auckland, Northland and Coromandel includes accounts of the eruption and erosion of the ancient Waitakere Volcano. He was made a Member of NZ Order of Merit in 2006 for services to earth science conservation. Please join us on this walking escapade to Piha.*
